In 1985, a young Nigerian architect named Itunu Hotonu made a decision that would change the course of her life she joined the Nigerian Navy.
But her journey had already begun with a barrier.
She had initially wanted to join the Nigerian Army’s Engineering Corps, but was told there was no place for women in that field.
She did not give up.
She turned to the Navy, where she was accepted into the Nigerian Defence Academy.
And then, she began breaking records.
Itunu Hotonu became the first woman to attend the Nigerian Defence Academy.
She didn’t simply graduate she finished as the best overall student in her class of 73, winning the Commander-in-Chief’s Prize and the Commandant’s Prize for the best research project.
She later became the first female military officer to serve as a Directing Staff an instructor at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji.
She also became the first female officer to command a squadron at the passing-out parade of the Naval College, Onne.
Then came the moment that changed African military history.
December 2012.
Itunu Hotonu was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral, becoming the first female admiral in Africa and the first woman to attain the rank in the history of the Nigerian Navy.
She had moved from architecture to the Navy.
From being told there was no place for women…
To becoming a pioneer in an institution dominated by men.
Her achievement was not simply about wearing the uniform or carrying two stars.
She became proof that sometimes, when one door is closed, greatness begins with having the courage to look for another door.
Rear Admiral Itunu Hotonu’s story is Nigerian history.
It is African history.
And it deserves to be remembered.
