Say No to GMO-Ejiro Umukoro

I'm glad Africans are actually catching up to this as Nigerians have finally woken up and gone out into the streets to protest this agricultural madness in the name of patents and intellectual property on grains and seeds ownership, etc. The reality that these GMOs are not even good for consumption in the long run. The health cost in Europe and USA is soo much that it stands to reason that Nigeria should, as a matter of policy, STOP IMPORTING GMO SEEDS INTO THE COUNTRY. Agricultural food drawn from earth should not be "patented", else we're going to hear am! The hunger in the land is because we refused to machanise our farming processes, inspire the next generation to love agriculture, lack of production and storage plants made possible by 24 hours electricity supply or power, poor agricultural institutions who are not producers of crops, outsourcing our production of various cash crops and seeds to foreign countries at lost cost while we purchase the finished produce at a 1000% of the cost of seeds bought from us. For over two decades I've not bought so called "foreign rice" because I know they're not healthy or safe due to their long stays on high seas, silos as well as the preservatives used to keep them from rotting. When in reality, the rice has no real nutritional value anymore. The way Nigerians die for foreign rice leaves me looking at them with shock. How people prefer to eat poison in the name of status beats the hell of me. A country should feed itself. The amount of wasted fertile farmlands across Nigeria is staggering. The North continues to enable desertification by refusing to reclaim those lands intentionally. Still, fertile lands abound in the North. In the East, the government watches as erosion washes away top rich soil and sub soil. In the South, the greed to sell all lands for real estate is a dangerous and disturbing trend that a policy on this needs to address this madness. The urban centres are so choked up, no room to even grow gardens and small farms! How do you sell all the lands for plazas, housing, hotels, businesses and none for agricultural development? Yet, the rural areas with good lands and plush vegetation are sitting idle year in, year out! Who do una? Have you also noticed the quality of beans on the market? These are not good beans o. Even the fish farm of catfish and chickens are now almost tasteless. You can taste the antibiotics fed the chickens and catfishes from the feeds they're fed and we're still consuming that rubbish! We need to take action now and hold every agricultural research institution, agricultural agencies or MDAs and those appointed into these offices to start doing their jobs. The customs who also allow these yeye imported rice, and GMO SEEDS need to also do better. Enough already! Haba. Why are we using our hands to destroy all the goodness this earth gives us in the name of Oyibo capitalism!
