In demonstration of compassion and in the spirit of new year 2025 celebration, we visited the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre to celebrate with the incarcerated Prisoners.
We reassured the inmates of our administration’s commitment to improving their welfare, including better healthcare, skills acquisition programs, and legal aid for those eligible for early release or fair trials.
We provided some items including cows, food items, toiletries and financial support to the Centre.
We also promised to replace the damaged 10,000 capacity water tank.
Whilst we recognize that the Correctional Centre is under the purview of the Federal Government of Nigeria, we believe that we can contribute our quota to ensure that the inmates feel a sense of belonging.
During the visit, we interacted with inmates, encouraging them to remain hopeful and use their time in incarceration for personal growth and transformation. We emphasized that correctional facilities should serve as reformative institutions rather than places of abandonment.
We further promised to make such visits a regular occurrence to ensure sustained support and engagement.
We thank the Comptroller General of the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre, the officers and the Inmates, for the warm reception we received.
It is important to note that this visit underscores our administration’s dedication to social inclusion and justice reform.
CITY MAYOR.
