D'TIGRESS, Nigeria's Senior Women's National Basketball Team of Nigeria has gaven the country a befitting Gift to celebrate it's 61st Independence Anniversary coming up on Friday, 1st October, 2021 by sensationally winning the 2021 Women's Afrobasket Championship today, Sunday, 26th September, 2021 in Younde, Cameroon after defeating Mali by 70 to 59 points.
In a dominant display on the final day of competition, D'Tigress, who are the defending champions and African No. 1 ranked team, lived up to expectations and outclassed Mali by a total of 11 points to retain the trophy that the team also won in the previous 2019 edition in Senegal.
D'Tigress have now won the Afrobasket back to back three (3) times; having won the 2017 and 2019 editions, becoming the second country only to have achieved such feat after Senegal who had, in the past, won it back to back four (4) times. D'Tigress can match the feat of the Senegalese if they can successfully retain the trophy in the next (2023) edition.
Also, today's monumental victory by D'Tigress brought the total number of Women's Afrobasket won by Nigeria to Five (5), second only to Senegal who had won a total of Eleven (11).
Coach Otis Hugley, his backroom technical staff and all the 12-woman playing squad of D'Tigress deserve national commendation and awards for, once again, bringing honour to Nigeria through this golden trophy they won; which is nationally, internationally and rightly seen as an Independence Anniversary Gift to the nation of Nigeria.
