Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams are set to qualify for the 17th edition of the IAAF World Athletics Championship holding from the 27th September to 6th October, 2019, in Doha, Qatar.
With the the qualifying period for the relays spanning from 7th March, 2018, to 6th September, 2019, both teams currently occupy the 16th and 11th positions respectively on the IAAF toplist. The Top 10 from the 2019 IAAF World Relays back in May, and Top 6 from the current standings will make it to the global championships.
The women’s 4x400m team’s path to the Championships looks the most straightforward after the quartet of Patience Okon-George, Glory Nathaniel, Praise Idamadudu and Yinka Ajayi clocked 3:25.29 on their way to winning Silver at the Commonwealth Games on the 14th of April, 2018.
Nigeria’s 4x100m women’s qualification is hanging by a thread at the moment as their Commonwealth Games Bronze-winning run of 42.75s last year sees them occupying the 16th spot on the qualification lists. However, they would have to hope that France or any other nation currently occupying 17th place, don’t run faster before the 6th September deadline.
Prior to the recently a concluded African Games, Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m team occupied 16th position by virtue of their 38.52s Commonwealth Games run also. However, Ghana’s 38.30s performance in Rabat has pushed Nigeria into 17th and out of Doha, unless the team plans to run again in the next two days and post a faster time as well!
