Osa Cookey is the CEO of Office and Home Limited. One of the leading polo player in Portharcourt polo club,not just a polo player but he is hailed as the undisputed King of Bikers. In this interview with Eric olusesan of naijaentertainers.blogspot.com, he takes us round his passion of sports world.
Tell us about yourself?
I Grew up in portharcourt with a Bsc in physiology from University of Portharcourt. Am a Carpenter and the Managing Director of Office and Home limited. I also have a motorbike business where we do biker's training, repairs and sell bikes.
How were you introduced to the game of polo?
I was born in the Vom in Plateau state. So i was exposed to Horses as a child. However I started playing polo in 1992 in phortharcourt polo club.
Why is polo called the game for the royals?
Maybe, then you have to be a Royal (wealthy) to keep Horses to be able to play polo.
But not anymore.
Once you can keep a few Horses you can play.
What's your most memorable moment on the field of polo?
That was the day I scored the winning goal in a high goal match. I was probably the weakest member of the team then. It was a tie and it was less than a minuite to the end of the game. The opposing team's defender Missed a hit in and I went for the balll and scored the winning goal.
How do you get the youths to take to the game of polo?
It's tough because of the recession in the Economy. Horses are not as affordable as they used to be.
What qualities makes the portharcourt polo club unique?
A good field. We have two fields. One main field, and one practice field. Nice people, a culture, squash court, swimming pool, club house, lounge. We have the most facilities and grounds as compared to other non-privately owned clubs.
You are not just a polo player but also a biker, how do you combine these two powerful sports?
They both give me the rush. The both require skill.
