young and upcoming “makeup nerd ” Lumati jessica, from portharcourt. When jeflops began to show
her interest in makeup about three years ago, she quickly established a
reputation for flawless makeup application. More recently, she has
become known for applying long lasting eye make-up which could last for
hours and hours.In this interview with Eric olusesan,she reveals how the journey has been so far.
What is your background?
I'm from rivers state, ikwerre to be precise. I was born & raised in PH city. I'm the first child. I'm a graduate of microbiology with the university of port harcourt. I pursued a makeup career at house of tara makeup school, portharcourt in 2012. Besides that I worked with M. Sidoni nig ltd for 2yrs before I was employed as a classroom teacher in october 2013.
How it all began?
Before I gained admission into the university, I worked with different CEOs as a sales girl, computer operator & front desk officer. I admired my bosses and i wanted to be like them. Then I said to my self "Jessica, you need to be hardworking if you want to be a Boss Lady". Then I started working hard. I sold anything that would give me profit when I was in school. After my youth service, I got a job but then I didn't want to depend on just my salary. Then I decided to do what I've passion for. I registered in house of tara makeup school in 2012... That was how Jeflops started.
What inspires you? well, I've always been inspired by experts. And it doesn't matter if the expert is an expert housekeeper, an expert gardener, an expert maintenance man, an expert carpenter. I'm drawn to people who know what they're doing, who think about their everyday work, who try to make their work better than it's ever been before.
What's the unique selling point of your outfit?
The unique selling point of Jeflops: Well if you offer a specific kind of Services that's Unique Selling Point. Jeflops integrated services offers different services and in all we sell quality makeup products at recommended retailers' price. For e.g the amount you get Tara products from us is exactly the same amount Tara sells & this applies to other beauty/makeup products. Our makeup school is among the cheapest in Portharcourt. You can never visit our shop & leave without a touch of Jeflops.
How fulfilled are you in your chosen career?
A fulfilling career doesn’t happen by wishful thinking and it is usually different from the baby dreams and aspirations you had while you were much younger. So I'd say I'm not there yet but I'm not where I used to be yesterday.
Who is your role model?
my Mum is my role model because she kind of made me to be who I am today. She is hardworking & dedicated to what ever she does. She taught me that a woman does not have to totally depend on a man. She has a good heart, but sometimes she can get mad. The special thing about her is that she is not afraid to show her sensitive side and she stands up for what she believes in.
How do you unwind?
When I'm stressed out from work or stressed out in general, I withdraw and just want to be by myself. I'll watch my favorite TV shows, favorite movies or go to the movies, go on the internet (YouTube, FB, blogspots, etc), and eat . Just mindless stuff where I don't have to think.
Advice for the Nigerian Youths?
I believe that people are really not lazy; they simply just have goals that do not inspire them. As a young person, find that goal, find a reason, strategic enough to inspire you. Allow that drive to meet your vision. True success requires vision to soar against all odds. It is this vision that creates possibility out of the impossible. People who claim that things cannot be done, naturally gets overtaken by people who start doing them.what do you think the government can do to help the industry ?
They should Provide grant, certify that beauty products are safe & healthy before they can be sold to consumers.
where do we see your label in the next five years?
We are working on our business plan to grow our business. Jeflops Integrated Services will be the first place to shop for a wide selection of medium to high-end quality makeup & beauty product . We will remain dedicated to seeking out new, innovative ways to be green and increase our services and efficiencies. As the economy continues to improve, we plan to re address our expansion plans and look forward to opening more branches in the south-south area.
