In recent times ,many Port Harcourt based music stars have relocated to
Lagos to pursue their career. The main reason we gathered is to seek
greener pastures. Over the years, Garden City based artistes have not
been able to make money just like their Lagos based counterparts who are
out-doing each other spending heavily acquiring houses and latest
automobiles. Though this city is blessed with a large number of
talented artistes, they however struggle to get big marketers to invest
in their arts. Another reason why many of them don’t make money is the
availability of limited paid shows. The show promoters in Port Harcourt
would rather spend big cash bringing Lagos based acts to the city, than
paying the local artistes. Consequently , they tend to have the local
artistes on their shows for free. The absence of good record labels in
the city is another factor affecting the growth of the industry. Most of
artistes in the city invest their money on their projects without
possibility of making returns . Also , unlike Lagos where corporate
bodies sponsor shows , the companies in the city don’t see the Port
Harcourt entertainment industry as what they should identify with. Due
to all the above mentioned reasons, the industry has been stagnant for
several years, hence a large number of Port Harcourt based artistes have
moved to Lagos to their promote their arts since it is a known fact
that , the centre of excellence is the headquarters of entertainment in
Nigeria. Burna Boy who relocated to Lagos last year seems to have
established himself as one of the most sought-after artistes at the
moment headlining many shows alongside Lagos based A-list artistes.
Also, Mr 2kay, the rave of the moment in the garden city who recently
moved to Lagos. He was officially unveiled to his Lagos fans at the
Industry Nite Show few weeks back. Popular Dancehall act, Waconzy has
equally relocated to Lagos to continue with his career. Also top female
acts , Emmanuella and Lilyjean have also joined the band wagon. And as
you read this , a couple of Port Harcourt based artistes are planning
to move into Lagos soon.
