Renewed Hope:Over 1800 Families Get Relief in Rivers State

Over 1,800 families in Rivers State received food support through the Renewed Hope Initiative Food Outreach Programme during an event held at the Government House in Port Harcourt yesterday

The outreach drew wives of 14 governors, the wife of the Chief of Staff to the President, and other dignitaries.

Representing First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Betta Edu said the programme was set up to support vulnerable families nationwide. She noted that with backing from two partners, the initiative reaches two states each month.

Rivers marked the 26th beneficiary, following distributions in 25 states and the FCT. Edu added that the scheme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda by boosting food sufficiency and aiding vulnerable groups.

She also announced plans to set up food banks in primary healthcare centres across all LGAs, targeting pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu said the initiative does more than provide relief—it restores dignity to struggling families. She stressed that social investment should be treated as a responsibility, not charity, and said the programme fits Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s goal of improving citizens’ socio-economic wellbeing.

Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Valeria Fubara, praised the First Lady for the intervention, saying it continues to empower families and vulnerable people in the state. She called it evidence of people-centred governance and reassurance that residents have not been forgotten.

Mrs. Fubara noted that over 5,000 people had benefited from earlier phases of the initiative, with 1,800 more families covered in this latest distribution. She also thanked Governor Fubara for supporting programmes aimed at improving residents’ welfare.
