“How do Deaf children understand mathematics"- Jane Ottah

Some people often ask me, “How do Deaf children understand mathematics?” and I just smile because my honest question back is, “Well, how do hearing children understand mathematics too?” Learning is a process for every child, whether Deaf or hearing, and with the right teaching methods, patience, and creativity, children can grasp concepts beautifully. Mathematics is not about hearing or not hearing,it’s about understanding patterns, numbers, logic, and problem-solving. For Deaf children, I make use of visual aids, sign language, real-life examples, and plenty of practical demonstrations to break down each concept step by step. Once they see it, connect it to their daily life, and practice it, the understanding comes naturally. That’s why I decided to share this video, showing how I teach mathematics to Deaf kids. You’ll see how engaged they are, how well they participate, and how proud they feel when they get the answers right. It is always a joy to watch their confidence grow. So, the real truth is: every child can learn mathematics,it’s just about the approach. Deaf children are not left behind; they only need the right tools and support, and they can shine just as bright as anyone else.
